Hello and welcome to The Real Rug Company, 2012.

We thought we might start off this year by taking a look at the rug that started it all. The rug that looks just as at home in the mahogany confines of an academics library as on the marble floor of a rockstars bedroom... the luxurious Flokati.

We generally concentrate on the 2800g/m2 and 1700g/m2 thicknesses, as these cover the spectrum of an ultra-thick luxurious, warm, centrepiece to the room, but also being affordable to even the most modest of budgets. We can go up to 4000+ g/m2 if you wish.

Our Flokati are made from 100% New Zealand wool, which is widely accepted to be the highest quality wool for making rugs. Wool is naturally stain resistant and in fact actually looks better the more it is used. Over time you will notice your rug get a wonderful lustre and really make itself at home, becoming one of your favourite pieces of furniture.

We have our Flokati made in the homeland of all Flokati, Greece. We have worked with the same factory for many years and as well as being masters of their craft, they are also very nice people to work with too!

Flokati Rugs have been a Greek tradition for centuries. The rugs originally serviced the shepherds, being used as clothing, beds for tents, keeping them warm during the long winter months. The 5th century Vlachs, who lived in Samarina, the highest Village on the Pindos mountains, were the inventors of the Flokati Rug.

We find the classic off-white is by far the most popular still, though recent years have seen the popularity of the mixed Beige & White increase. This brightens the room up a little more with it's rich almost buttery warmth of tone.

It has been an eventful year for us, we are getting busier and busier, and we are increasing our range as often as possible. Have you seen our Made To Order options, found underneath most rugs? (See the example of the Highlander rugs here)

You simply put the sizes you require into the boxes, and choose the delivery schedule you would prefer, and the total you would pay is shown for you.

We were very excited about our Pure Silk and our Bamboo rugs that arrived late on this year. Most surprising was that we could not tell which was which, they were both that soft! I can highly recommend the Bamboo rugs as they are very inexpensive and it will be the softest, nicest rug you buy all year, guaranteed! The "viscose" content in these is Eucaplyptus too, which we found interesting.

And the success story of the year..? Our Reindeer Hides! These have been flying out again, and we have barely been able to keep up with the demand. But we managed... The colouring on these is amazing.

Happy Valentines Day!

There's lots going on over at The Real Rug Company, new styles coming in all the time etc so we thought now would be a good time to remind everyone what's going on.

We are about to place yet another big order with the factory, and so we thought we would give you the opportunity to have one of our rugs made to your own size requirements!

Today, I stumbled across IKEAs Flokati rugs on their website.
I thought, we could never compete with such a massive company as IKEA because they buy enormous quantities.. but when I looked closer I noticed I was wrong.

See this comparison:

Our Flokati in our lightweight quality (1700g/m2), costs just £72 for the size 140x200 cm - and that includes free delivery. It is handtufted in 100% fine wool from New Zeeland in the Flokatis homeland Greece.

The squaremeter price for our rug is : £25.7
The price per kg for our rug is: £15.11

Ikeas thickest flokati is 800g/m2, and costs just £44.99 for the same size, but...
It is machinetufted, in these materials:
Pile: 100 % Pure New Wool
Base fabric: 100% polypropylene

The squaremeter price for IKEAs rug is : £16.06
The price per kg for IKEAs rug is: £20

So..consider this next time you buy a rug, that the rug you think might be the cheapest one isnt always really the cheapest one!

If you want one of our rugs, but it is not the size/shape/colour that you really want, then let us know.

We will be happy to make it especially for you.

It takes about a month to make (depending on size), and then we can either ship it straight to you by air , or you can save the money on shipping and wait for our next conatiner to arrive by sea.

Just contact us with your requirements. Most things are possible, and you'll probably be surprised that a custom made rug is only 20% more than our stocked rugs.

You can even send us a photo and have it made in to a rug.

Hooray!

8 tons of wonderful fluffy shag rugs, curly rugs, suede rugs, and new designer rugs are on the way to our warehouse.

Here is a taste of what's coming:

We haven't really decided what to call this rug yet. (Any ideas are welcome!) So far we thought, maybe rectangular spiral rug??

It will come in this colour and a couple of others. This rug is handtufted in 100% wool in the best quality from New Zeeland.

Some other news is our suede rugs (or leather rugs)

They look like this:

They are available in 5 colours and sizes.

Then we have our new "curly" rugs. (Which really are unscrewed Spring Twist Shag Rugs which feel and look like the curly fur of a persian sheep) o

They are easier to clean than our shaggy rugs (as highlander and flokati) because the yarn is twisted and it doesnt let go of as much fibres as a shag rug would do. You still get the "bouncyness"as our shag rugs have.

The curly rugs are also handtufted in 100% wool in the best quality from New Zeeland.

The curly rugs are available in 5 colours and 6 sizes.

Besides the new rugs, we will also restock the rugs that have sold out, and we will get some new colours in the old models as well.

Next week we will receive a truck loaded with 2 tons of flokatirugs from Greece!

Children in factories

I visited a carpet factory near Kathmandu yesterday, and took this photo.

I know no kids work there, and in some jobs I think it's fine to have a baby with you at work... but if the child is capable or allowed to wonder around (and eat bits of carpet), something needs changing urgently.

Nepal is one of my favourite countries and I wanted to have some rugs made here, but not in this factory - or any others where this is going on.

This factory has the Rugmark, like most that I have visited.

I'm really excited this week. The highlander rug which has proved to be very popular is now available in 4 more colours. These are expected to be in stock on the 21st October. Here are the first pictures....

The highlander rug is made from New Zealand wool and has a pile of about 10cm, so it is extremely thick and luxurious.
